Hello, I am Dr. Isaiah Bercot
I am a US licensed medical doctor. I graduated from medical school at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and was trained in psychiatry at the UT Health San Antonio General Psychiatry Residency Program.
I want to tell you a bit about me and why I became a psychiatrist. I came from a non-medical family and medical school was not always my plan, in fact prior to college (and even during college) I worked on a farm in Pennsylvania milking cows. After that I worked as a landscaper and an apprentice plumber. The problem was that I never really felt passionate about my jobs. That all changed however when I discovered exercise and how much better my mood, concentration, and energy were when I was regularly exercising.
This led me to go to college and study exercise science and biology with a plan of becoming a personal trainer or a physical therapist. Towards the end of college, I realized that I wanted to be able to promote exercise and help people achieve better mental health in a way that wouldn’t be possible if I was a physical therapist. Fortunately, I had very good grades due to my interest in science and so the transition to applying for medical school was relatively simple.
The next stage of my life sent me to Texas to go to medical school and later residency for psychiatry. In medical school I found that I was one of the few people who didn’t come from a medical family. Most of my classmates had at least one parent who was a doctor, and as far as I know I was the only student who had ever worked at a farm or as a plumber. While my background may have been a bit unusual it did give me a unique perspective. I kept me humble. While I am proud of the work I put in to become a doctor, I know that in no way does it make me superior as a person and that my job is not more important than anyone else’s. We are all important parts of society and we all have our role.
My passion for exercise and mental health combined with a unique background are what in my opinion set me apart. Ultimately that is what sent me to Colorado. I love the active outdoor lifestyle here, and the emphasis on health including mental health. So, in the end if you are looking for a doctor that is down to earth and willing to listen and respect you than I think I can fill that role for you. I look forward to meeting you.
